The success of the Type 6 armed with a light Shiboru gun led to the development of the Type 7. This was an improved model with an extended chassis, allowing the crew to reduce cramped conditions, and a pair of front "claws," equally useful for breaking through dense undergrowth as for repelling enemy infantry and even other light vehicles. A jointed tail, specially designed for the Type 61 light Shiboru gun, was also included, giving the gunner greater control during aiming. Considering the even stronger spider-like similarities of the Type 7 to its predecessor and the addition of a stinger tail, the walker was inevitably named Sasori ("Scorpion").
